We help you apply to an undergraduate or graduate degree. If you don’t meet all the entry requirements, you can enroll in an academic pathway program leading to a bachelor’s degree at ASU. You can also first join the English Language Program to qualify for a degree.

What are the entry requirements?

Please note: the information below shows general requirements for ASU admission and exceptions for some popular programs. Other degrees may have higher or extra requirements. Our education advisors can also provide details specific to your chosen major or degree.

Bachelor's degree entry requirements:

  • Academic level
    Most undergraduate majors

    For most bachelor’s degrees, applicants need:

    • GPA 3.00 in high school studies OR top 25% of high school graduating class

    Degrees with higher minimum grades:

    • Bachelor of Science majors in W. P. Carey School of Business – GPA 3.40 OR top 8% of high school class OR SAT/ACT exam
    • BSN Nursing – GPA 3.30 OR graduate in the top 25% of high school class
  • English language

    Most majors:

    • TOEFL/KiBT 61 / IELTS or IELTS Indicator 6.0 (no band below 5.5) / PTE 53 / DET 95 / KIE Advanced level

    Higher English level majors:

    • Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering majors on the Tempe campus – TOEFL 79 / IELTS or IELTS Indicator 6.5
    • BS Software Engineering – TOEFL 79 / IELTS or IELTS Indicator 6.5
    • BSN Nursing – TOEFL/KiBT 76 / IELTS or IELTS Indicator 6.5 (no band below 5.5)
    • Walter Cronkite School of Journalism & Mass Communication majors – TOEFL 100

    PLEASE NOTE: Conditional admission may be offered to applicants with lower English levels. After completing the Intensive English Program Advanced 2 level with B grades, students progress to their degree with a TOEFL waiver.

  • Admission tests and other requirements

    Bachelor of Science majors in W. P. Carey School of Business

    • SAT score 1230 or ACT score 25 or top 8% of high school (if GPA in core competencies is below 3.4)

    Bachelor’s degrees in Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, Tempe campus

    • SAT score 1210 or ACT score 24 or graduated in top 25% of high school (if GPA in core competencies is below 3.0)

    BSN Nursing

    • SAT score 1170 or ACT score 24 or graduated in top 25% of high school (in addition to GPA 3.30)

    Journalism majors

    • SAT score 1120 or ACT score 22 (in addition to GPA 3.00)

Requirements to transfer into a bachelor’s degree:

  • Academic level

    Required grades in transferable undergraduate credits (minimum 24 and maximum 64 credits):
    – Most majors – GPA 2.50
    – BSE Engineering Management – GPA 2.75
    – BA/BS Sustainability – GPA 3.00
    – Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering majors on the Tempe campus – GPA 3.00
    – W. P. Carey School of Business majors – GPA 3.00
    – Walter Cronkite School of Journalism & Mass Communication majors – GPA 3.00

  • English language

    Most majors:
    – TOEFL/KiBT 61 / IELTS or IELTS Indicator 6.0 / PTE 53 / DET 95 / KIE Advanced level

    Entry to 3.5-semester extended pathway program: completion of high school with GPA 2.00
    Entry to 3-semester pathway program: completion of high school with GPA 2.50 or top 35% of high school class
    Entry to 1-semester pathway program: completion of high school with GPA 2.75 and no mathematics competency deficiencies

    Progression to Global Management and Arts and Sciences majors:
    – from 1-semester pathway: GPA 2.75 in credit courses, with no grades below a C
    – from 3-semester or 3.5-semester extended pathway: GPA 2.50 in credit courses, with no grades below a C

    Progression to BA degrees in W. P. Carey School of Business:
    – from 1-semester pathway: GPA 3.25 in credit courses, with no grades below a B
    – from 3-semester pathway: GPA 3.00 in credit courses, with no grades below a C

    Progression to BS Accountancy:
    – from 1-semester pathway: GPA 3.25 in credit courses, with no grades below a B. Additionally, SAT score 1230 or ACT score 25.
    – from 3-semester pathway: GPA 3.00 in credit courses, with no grades below a C. Additionally, SAT score 1230 or ACT score 25.

  • English language

    Entry to Pathways:
    – TOEFL/KiBT 55 / IELTS or IELTS Indicator 5.5 / PTE 39 / KIE Higher Intermediate / DET 90

    Progression to Global Management and Arts and Sciences majors with TOEFL waiver:
    – from 1-semester pathway: GPA 2.75 in ASU-USA Pathways non-credit courses
    – from 3-semester or 3.5-semester extended pathway: GPA 2.50 in ASU-USA Pathways non-credit courses

    Progression to W.P. Carey majors with a TOEFL waiver:
    – from 1-semester pathway: GPA 3.00 in ASU-USA Pathways non-credit courses
    – from 3-semester pathway: GPA 2.50 in ASU-USA Pathways non-credit courses

    PLEASE NOTE: Conditional admission may be offered to Pathways applicants with lower English levels. After completing the Intensive English Program at Intermediate 2 level with B, students progress to their pathway with a TOEFL waiver.

Master's degree entry requirements:

  • Academic level and background

    Minimum grades in your last 60 credits of undergraduate level courses:
    – Most programs – GPA 3.00

    Degrees with higher minimum grades:
    – MS/MCS Computer Science (all concentrations) – GPA 3.25
    – MS Global Sustainability Science – GPA 3.25
    – MA/MS Sustainability – GPA 3.25
    – MS Industrial Engineering – GPA 3.20
    – MA Religious Studies – GAP 3.30
    – MSW Social Work – GPA 3.20

    Many master’s programs require applicants to have an undergraduate degree in a related subject.

    Programs requiring TOEFL 100 / IELTS or IELTS Indicator 7.5 / Duolingo 125:
    – Master of Global Management (MGM)

    PLEASE NOTE: “Admission with deficiencies” may be offered to most master’s degree applicants who have at least TOEFL 80 but require further development in their English speaking skills. After completing ELP with 80% or higher average, students progress to their degree.

  • Admission tests and other requirements

    GMAT or GRE score required by many programs:
    • GMAT or GRE for all degrees in W.P. Carey School of Business and Thunderbird School of Global Management
    • GRE for many degrees in Fulton Schools of Engineering, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and College of Health Sciences
    • GRE or GMAT for many degrees in Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions
    • GRE required for all degrees in School of Sustainability and School of Journalism

    Most master’s degree applications require one of more of the following supporting documents:
    – personal statement
    – writing sample
    – short essay questions
    – portfolio
    – resume
    – work experience
    – letters of recommendation

    Master of Laws (LLM):
    – Academic entry requirement: GPA 3.0 in a degree that qualifies you to practice law (equivalent of a JD degree in the U.S.).
    – Credential Assembly Service report (from the current year)
