Working while you’re studying can be quite challenging, but I love to challenge myself to find out how far I can go.

My name is Anxhela and I’m an international student from Albania. I finished my Foundation Certificate at the University of Brighton International College in 2020, and now I am studying for a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance at the University of Brighton.

I am also working part-time at Kaplan Living Brighton as a Wellbeing Co-ordinator for under-18 students. I wanted to share my experience of having a part-time job at university with you, so that you feel inspired and consider doing it too!

Opportunities are everywhere

I always dreamed about having a part-time job at university so that I could make my own money, but I never thought that I would get an offer for a part-time job within the first month of my first year at university.

I remember the day when I received the email offering me the job — I was so happy and nervous at the same time because it was my first job!

Kaplan helped me a lot to get this job because they told me about this great opportunity to work and learn new skills at the same time. Since I started this job, they have supported me by helping me progress in my role while balancing my studies.

Learning new skills is rewarding

I have learnt new skills such as how to communicate effectively with staff and students, how to deal with different scenarios inside and outside the workplace, and how to take on new responsibilities. This role developed me as a person in many ways and also gave me more confidence to stand on my own two feet and be independent.

The most exciting part of my role is that I get to take care of students who are younger than me. I think I am good at doing this because I was their age not long ago, so I understand how they feel.

Moreover, having the responsibility of supporting them makes me feel mature enough to take the next steps in my own life.

Balance is important

As I mentioned at the beginning, it can be challenging to have a part-time job at university, but it is never impossible. As long as you manage your time and schedule your day, there is always time to be prepared for your classes, do your coursework, progress at work and enjoy your free time.

I would encourage every student to find a part-time job at university because working helps you master skills, and studying builds your knowledge for a better you in the future.

Lastly, I would like to give some advice to students who are progressing to university. Never give up on discovering and challenging yourself while you are growing because the future you will be grateful and proud of what you have achieved!
