  • Luz Oliveros-Belardo (Philippines)

    Graduated from UConn

    Oliveros-Belardo was a pharmaceutical chemist who received a PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of Connecticut in 1957.

    Lifetime achievements

    Across her career, Oliveros-Belardo worked on projects relating to extracting essential oils and other chemicals from native Philippine plants for a range of purposes, including medicine, food and cosmetics. She was given the National Scientist of the Philippines award by the Philippine government in 1987.

  • Kartik Chandran (India)

    Graduated from UConn

    Kartik Chandran is an award-winning environmental engineer who received a PhD from the University of Connecticut.

    Lifetime achievements

    Chandran is a professor of environmental engineering at Columbia University and a global leader in sustainable wastewater treatment and engineered resource discovering. He has received a MacArthur “Genius Grant” for his groundbreaking work to transform wastewater into fertilizers, energy and other valuable resources.

  • Franklin Chang-Díaz (Costa Rica and USA)

    Graduated from UConn

    Franklin Chang-Díaz is a mechanical engineer, physicist and former NASA astronaut who received a bachelor’s in engineering from the University of Connecticut.

    Lifetime achievements

    Chang-Díaz is a veteran of 7 US space shuttle missions. He was the third Latin American (and first Latin American immigrant) to be selected by NASA to go into space. Chang-Díaz was inducted into the NASA Hall of Fame in 2012.

  • Tansu Çiller (Turkey)

    Graduated from UConn

    Tansu Çiller is a notable Turkish politician who received a PhD from the University of Connecticut

    Lifetime achievements

    Tansu Çiller returned to Turkey after her studies and became the nation’s youngest full-time professor. Elected to Parliament in 1991, she was soon appointed Minister of State. Çiller then served as Turkey’s 22nd Prime Minister, the country’s first and only woman to hold the position.
