My experience studying Economics at the University of Birmingham

Mohammed from Saudi Arabia studied a University of Birmingham foundation pathway in Arts, Social Sciences, Business and Law at Birmingham International Academy. He is now studying a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics at the University of Birmingham.

In this blog, Mohammed shares his experience as an Economics student at the University, covering key lectures, facilities, career preparation, and advice for future international students.

Why I chose to study Economics at Birmingham

Choosing to study Economics at the University of Birmingham felt like the right decision from the start. I’ve always been fascinated by how economies shape the world around us — from everyday prices like a cup of coffee to the way governments make major financial decisions.

What really deepened my interest in economics was seeing how the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global structures and highlighted the importance of understanding both economic and social behaviour. I wanted to be part of a field that helps interprets these changes and contributes to solving real-world problems.

The University of Birmingham stood out to me because of its global reputation and high rankings, particularly in economics and the social sciences.

As a research-led university, it places special emphasis on areas like behavioural economics, allowing us to study beyond the theory. We’re encouraged to ask questions, apply concepts, and explore their relevance in today’s world.

As an international student, I also found the campus to be incredibly welcoming and diverse. Meeting people from different cultures has enriched my experience both inside and outside the classroom. From academic support to cultural integration, I always felt like there were resources available to help me settle in and succeed.

My journey through the Birmingham International Academy

My experience at the Birmingham International Academy (BIA) was a turning point in my academic journey. It wasn’t just about improving my English or learning how the UK education system works — it was about building a foundation that prepared me to study university-level economics with confidence.

At the BIA, I developed essential skills that I still rely on today. I learned how to read academic texts effectively, structure essays clearly, and use advanced vocabulary to communicate complex ideas. I also gained valuable experience in group work, presenting ideas, and critical thinking — all of which are essential in my Economics degree.

What made the BIA stand out was its emphasis on independent learning and research. I became comfortable with sourcing academic material, analysing them, and developing well-reasoned arguments.

More than anything, the BIA helped me transition into university life at my own pace. It provided a supportive environment that helped me connect with other international students and adapt to a new academic and cultural setting.

Teaching and learning experience

The teaching and learning experience at the University of Birmingham has truly impressed me. It’s interactive, engaging, and student focused.

One aspect I really appreciate is how approachable the lecturers and tutors are. They follow a sort of semi-open-door policy, often making themselves available outside of scheduled hours to answer questions or provide guidance. That level of availability has been really helpful whenever I’ve needed clarification or a deeper insight into certain topics.

They also care about us as freethinkers, not just students. Whether it’s sharing useful resources, offering feedback, or checking in during busy periods, the student support extends beyond academics.

Overall, the environment here encourages us to stay curious, take responsibility for our learning, and have fun doing so — making the experience both rewarding and empowering.

Facilities for international students

The University of Birmingham offers a wide range of facilities that make life as an international student much easier. From academic support to social and wellbeing services, everything is designed to help students settle in and succeed.

The Academic Skills Centre was especially helpful for me, particularly when I had questions related to maths. Their workshops and one-on-one support made academic challenges more manageable and simpler to grasp.

When it came to accommodation, the Housing Services made the transition smooth. They helped me explore suitable accommodation options and hosted social events that helped me make new friends.

For balance and wellbeing, the Sport and Fitness Club offers everything from gym facilities to classes and sports clubs. Additionally, the Mental Health and Wellbeing Service is available to support students’ mental and emotional health whenever it’s needed.

All in all, these facilities have helped me stay focused, connected, and well-supported throughout my time at university.

Career support

As an Economics student, I have found the career services at the University of Birmingham extremely useful in helping me explore and prepare for a range of career paths.

The Careers Network offers a variety of support, including skills workshops, one-to-one guidance, and job-search tools. What I found particularly helpful was how they facilitate connections with top employers through placements, insight days, and networking events. Thanks to these sessions, I’ve gained a clearer understanding of what it’s like to work at firms such as PwC, KPMG, and Deloitte.

In addition, the Birmingham Business School Careers team runs tailored events for students in business-related fields. I’ve attended sessions where alumni and industry professionals shared insights into careers in consulting, finance, and public policy. These events have given me a clearer idea of how to apply what I’m learning in class to real-world roles.

Overall, these services have helped me feel more confident about my future and equipped me with the tools to build a strong professional profile while still at university.

Advice for future international students

My advice is to embrace the full experience. Be curious, ask questions, and don’t hesitate to make use of the resources available. From lecturers and career advisers to your fellow students, everyone wants to see you succeed.

Get involved in university life. Attend workshops, go to talks, join a student society and say yes to new experiences. You’ll learn just as much outside the classroom as you do inside it.

And finally, enjoy the journey. University life goes by quickly. Take time to explore Birmingham, meet people from around the world, and make the most of everything the experience has to offer. It’s more than just earning a degree; it’s about shaping your future knowledge and future network.
