My experience studying Film and Television Production at the University of York

Hi, everyone! My name is Dana and I’m from China. I’m studying a bachelor’s degree in Film and Television Production at the University of York.

I’m so happy that I decided to study in York, and I want to share my experience with you!

Why did I choose to study in York?

I chose to study at the University of York because it’s one of the finest universities in the UK to study a Film and TV Production degree. It ranks 5th in the UK for Film Production and Photography (Guardian University Guide 2023), and is home to some of the best production facilities at any UK university. This includes cameras from Sony, sound device mixers and microphones from DPA, and high-end immersive VR headsets.

Before moving to York, I found out that the city is filled with history and culture, which was very appealing to me. I wanted to study in a city that was different to mine, and after discovering the fascinating heritage of York, I knew I made the right decision to study here.

The people in York have been very welcoming, and I have become familiar with the environment quite quickly. Studying a degree preparation course at the University of York International Pathway College helped me settle in faster, and I felt more relaxed when I began my studies at the University of York.

My experience as a Film and Television Production student at York

The main thing that pushed me to study a Film and Television Production degree is the passion and admiration I have for the subject. For example, I really like how British culture has influenced the film and television industries — it’s something I find quite interesting and I would love to have an influence on how the industries are shaped in the future.

There are many theories that you can learn and projects that you can get involved with on the Film and Television Production bachelor’s degree at the University of York.

In my first year, I learnt about different technologies and created a five-minute video by myself. In my second year, I learnt the step-by-step process of how to produce a short film, and directed a studio show of my own. It’s been very exciting!

Now that I’m studying here, it’s easy to see why the University ranks so highly for Film Production! There’s so much support available from teachers, and it’s been really nice learning from academics who are just as passionate about Film and Television Production as I am.

Studying abroad is a fantastic experience that includes more than just an education. With an international degree, you’ll learn more about yourself, hone your language skills, and broaden your career prospects.

My advice to international students is to have an open mind, immerse yourself in the culture and have fun. University only happens once, so make the most of it.
