Samuel Osei-Nimo from Ghana began his UK academic journey in 2005 with a Graduate Diploma (now called a Pre-Master’s) in Business at Nottingham Trent International College. He was part of the first ever Kaplan cohort to progress to Nottingham Trent University where he went on to complete an MSc in Management and Information Systems, followed by a PhD in Business. Today, he’s a Senior University Lecturer at Nottingham Business School.
As Kaplan celebrates 20 years of helping students achieve their dreams, Samuel’s story is a great example of what’s possible.
In this blog, he shares his journey as an international student in the UK, how it shaped his teaching, and the value international students bring to the classroom.
Where it all began, 20 years ago
It all started around 20 years ago, when I first came to the UK as an international student. Before that, I had completed a BSc in Agricultural Engineering at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana. During my one-year national service placement at a bank in Ghana, I developed a strong interest in business and decided to explore this path further.
Studying in the UK provided me with the opportunity to experience a different academic culture, gain international exposure, and broaden my understanding of the world. It was a decision that shaped both my professional and personal life.
Challenges as an international business student
I faced very few challenges as an international business student. The main adjustment was the shift towards a learning style that prioritised critical thinking, analysis, and discussion.
Nottingham Trent International College provided strong student support systems to help learners adapt. From group activities to tours of major UK destinations, my schedule was so engaging that there was little room for homesickness or culture shock. This environment allowed me to focus entirely on my studies and personal growth.

How Nottingham Trent International College helped shape my path
The College prepared me thoroughly for my academic journey. It introduced me to a new learning approach, major business concepts, and the skills to work with people from different cultural and academic backgrounds.
My MSc in Management and Information Systems was built on this solid foundation, and my PhD research topic area grew from a project and methodology I first worked on at the College.
Importantly, my first lecturer at the College, Dr. Nestor Valero-Silva, later became my PhD supervisor — a lasting connection that reflects the College’s impact on my path.
Bringing global experience to business education
As a former international student, I understand the challenges of adapting to a new academic and cultural environment. Studying alongside peers from many different countries gave me a rich appreciation of diverse perspectives and learning styles. This now shapes how I teach and support my students, helping them thrive both academically and personally.
For me, teaching is about more than sharing knowledge — it’s about giving back. It allows me to share my own experiences as an international student with both home and overseas students. This enriches their learning and reinforces the idea that business is global and benefits from international perspectives. Teaching also requires constant learning, adaptability, and a commitment to inspiring others.
Building on this, a business degree leads to many career paths. Graduates can work in areas like:
- Business Analytics
- Project Management
- Consultancy
- Data Analytics
- Digital Transformation
- Accountancy
- Logistics and Distribution
- Human Resources
The combination of business knowledge and analytical skills is valued across industries such as finance, healthcare, technology, and public services.
Learning from international students
Working with international students as both an educator and former international student myself is very interesting. It’s important to get rid of any perceptions and preconceived notions about international students.
Patience is key, and you learn a lot from international students. Personally, working with people from diverse backgrounds — including home students — has significantly broadened my perspective on business, interacting with people, and the world. I feel that the international environment is a gift to every academic.
