  • As of June 2025, there is some additional guidance to be aware of. Check out our advice below.
  • Visa interviews have now resumed, so you should be able to book your appointment and keep your study plans on track.

Not sure what your options are? Kaplan will work with you to create a personalized enrollment route. Contact your advisor or email us at asu@kaplan.com

ASU is an excellent place to study, and we’ll do everything possible to keep your US study plans on track and on time.

Important visa guidelines

On June 17, 2025, the U.S. government shared new guidance for student visa applications. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Social media settings: When you apply for a visa, you may be asked to set your social media profiles to public. This helps officials review your application more thoroughly.
  • Application screening: U.S. embassies will now take a closer look at all applications to make sure they meet updated security guidelines.
  • Visa interviews restarting: Student visa processing, which had been paused, is now restarting — so interviews are back on track.

These updates are part of a broader effort to improve safety during the visa process. We’ll keep you informed of any further changes, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.

Waiting for admission decision

If you’re waiting to hear back from ASU, don’t worry — the University and Kaplan will both contact you as soon as a decision is made.

Here are your next steps:

  • Activate your ASURITE ID — you’ll receive this by email 1–3 business days after applying. Use it to sign in to MyASU, where you can check your application status, see if anything is missing, and track your I-20 status.

  • Ensure all documents have been submitted — including official test score reports.

  • Start gathering financial documents — you’ll need these for your I-20 and international student visa.

  • Check MyASU regularly — stay updated on your application progress. If you need help using MyASU, see this tutorial.

Note: With some bachelor’s degrees, you may receive a conditional admission offer if you meet academic requirements but still need to improve your English. This gives you up to three semesters to meet the language requirements before starting your degree.

Getting your visa

Most international students will need to obtain an F-1 visa. See below for a step-by-step guide on what you need to do:

  1. While this is not required to begin your I-20 request, paying your deposit early is a great way to show your commitment to ASU — and it helps us move your application forward.

  2. Complete your Financial Guarantee Form

Fill out all sections of the Financial Guarantee Form, showing you have enough funds for one academic year at ASU. List all funding sources, select ‘No’ for SEVIS ID if not transferring, and include dependents if applicable.

    See more details below

  3. Prepare your other documents

If applicable, provide a loan letter, sponsor or scholarship letter, and valid passport scan. Graduate students should also include an assistantship letter. If you’ll be accompanied by dependents on an F-2 visa, include copies of their passports as well.

  4. Upload documents to ASU’s portal

  5. Complete your F-1 visa application

  6. Attend a visa interview at your closest US Embassy or Consulate

Check out this guide for tips

  7. Wait for a decision and receive your F-1 visa

Maintaining your US visa status

Here are some key tips and considerations for protecting your F-1 visa status.

  • Circle with a checkmark in the centre

You may not enter the United States more than 30 days before your program of study begins as listed on your SEVIS I-20 or DS-2019. Do not enter later than the school start date as this will result in being denied entry to the US.

  • Circle with a checkmark in the centre

Contact your designated school official (DSO) as soon as you arrive. You’ll also need to complete your online SEVIS check-in.

  • Circle with a checkmark in the centre

Start at the university that issued your I-20 — remember, your visa was granted for you to study at a specific university: ASU!

  • Circle with a checkmark in the centre

Stay enrolled full-time. To be considered fully enrolled, undergraduates must take at least 12 credits per term, and graduates must take at least 9 credits per term. If you can’t study full time, contact your DSO to see if you’re eligible for a reduced course load.

  • Circle with a checkmark in the centre

Attend all required classes as it’s important to maintain normal academic progress. You are expected to complete your program by the end date on your I-20.

  • Circle with a checkmark in the centre

Talk to the International Students and Scholars Center first if you want to change your major, drop classes, travel, extend your program, or have a change in funding.
