University of Glasgow and NTU win Times Higher Education Awards!

We’re delighted to share some fantastic news: the University of Glasgow won the University of the Year award, while Nottingham Trent University was honoured for its Outstanding Support for Students at the 2020 Times Higher Education Awards!

The University of Glasgow is University of the Year 2020

The University of Glasgow has a proud history of pioneering change. Now, it has been recognised for its work to address one of the biggest issues of 2020: racial inequality.

Following the results of a 2016 survey of the University’s history, Glasgow pledged to spend £20 million to create opportunities for students from minority groups. Since then, the University has established the Glasgow-Caribbean Centre for Development Research with the University of the West Indies, and introduced scholarships for ethnic minority students.

As more universities are now addressing the issues raised by the Black Lives Matter movement, Glasgow is leading the sector and even offering support and advice to other institutions.

The judges called the University of Glasgow a “hugely deserving” winner and praised it for “taking a moral stance”. The University’s good work is set continue, as it is now planning to its environmental footprint.

“Outstanding student support” at Nottingham Trent University

Similarly, Nottingham Trent University was rightly rewarded for its efforts to make its campuses safer for all students.

With equal rights for women and minority groups two of the biggest social issues in the UK, Nottingham Trent University has taken action with a university-wide training and support programme designed address social injustice on its campuses and beyond.

Over 1,100 staff and students received specialist training, with anyone who needs to report an incident to the University receiving excellent support. The judges were especially impressed by the scale of the programme which reached thousands of students and staff, and by how closely the University worked with the students’ union when implementing the changes.

Times Higher Education Awards 2020

We think both Glasgow and Nottingham Trent University deserve a big round of applause! The Times Higher Education Awards and widely respected and are also known as “the Oscars of higher education” so this is a massive achievement.
