My path, my way: Jessy's story

31 Jul 2018 - Fiona Raleigh

Kaplan is a place that welcomes people from all over the world and from many different backgrounds. And we’re not just talking about our students! Our staff have some incredible stories about their paths to where they are now, and we hope these will inspire you to follow your path, your way.

Meet Jessy from China. She grew up in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan, a province in southwest China. It’s a picturesque, mountainous area in the foothills of the Himalayas, and is home to over 25 Chinese ethnic minorities!

Jessy comes from a hardworking family, and so she put in the work at school to get good grades.

“I did try hard at school and, when I was younger, I wanted to become a vet, but I never understood Chemistry very well, so I suppose that wasn’t my path in the end.”

My path, my way: meet Jessy
When she was a teenager, Jessy moved to the UK to study. After achieving 5.5 in her IELTS test, she enrolled at a college in Birmingham to study A levels – these are internationally recognised qualifications that can help students gain entry to British universities.

After finishing her A levels, Jessy was accepted to the University of Warwick in the UK to study an undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Studies.

Gaining experience

Her interest in this subject led her to volunteer at pre-schools and nurseries in the UK and Norway during university holidays, where she gained extra knowledge and experience to help her in her studies. Jessy’s bachelor’s degree included a year abroad. During this time, she had the opportunity to return to her hometown of Kunming to work at an Early Years start-up!

Having gained all of this valuable experience, Jessy realised after finishing her undergraduate degree that working with young children wasn’t quite right for her – at least not 25 of them at the same time! Instead, she chose to follow a career in Education Management.

So, she pursued a master’s degree in Further Education at Kings College London.

Jessy was still studying her master’s degree when she had an interview for an internship in Kaplan’s Admissions team. She says:

“I think my experience of being an international student myself was one of the reasons Kaplan hired me. I’ve been working at Kaplan for 5 years now and I’m currently the Head of Admissions Operations for the UK. This is my path so far.”
