How vlogging improves your English

23 Apr 2019 - Becky Robertson

When it comes to mastering a new language, practising outside of the classroom is just as important as what you learn in class. From language-learning apps to chatting with friends, there are so many ways to improve your English while studying abroad. However, one technique you might not have tried before is vlogging (video blogging)!

Our Student Ambassadors create regular vlogs showing what life is like as an international student. We asked them how vlogging has helped to improve their English. Here's what they said!

Mirsa from Panama

Mirsa is studying at Bournemouth University International College:

"I applied to be a Kaplan Student Ambassador to step out of my comfort zone and do things, like vlogging, that I would not have done before. Vlogging has helped me with my confidence. It has made me become more aware of my pronunciation of words, and make sure that I am communicating in an understandable and proper way."

"Being in front of the camera and organising your ideas for the video you are recording was a completely new experience that I am extremely grateful for. While recording, I have to make sure that the way I express myself is clear and coherent for the viewers to understand, and also make sure that I do not speak too fast. At first I was really nervous about what I was going to say and show, but as I continued recording I became more relaxed and confident."

Kenny from Nigeria

Kenny is studying a graduate degree at Northeastern University:

"Being a quiet person, vlogging has really helped me — not only to communicate in English, but also to be more sure of myself. Among other things, I have been able to meet new people and to improve my interpersonal skills while doing the things I love to do. Vlogging is about telling a story, my story, to a larger audience. This medium has immensely helped me to build my confidence, to the point where I am able to speak confidently and more clearly among my peers, in class and during presentations."

Malika from Kazakhstan

Malika studies on the Global Pathways Program at Pace University:

"The main advantage of vlogging is the chance to increase my English level in a fun and easy way. Being a student in an international environment at Pace University, I completely understand that the only way to develop my language skills is to practice speaking, writing and thinking in English as much as possible."

"I record videos about my daily student life in New York City, and that definitely helps me to create small talk during face-to-face conversations with people around me. Vlogging helps me to improve my creativity, get rid of the language barrier and become more confident in pronunciation. It is a funny and fascinating process!"

Shifra from Rwanda

Shifra studied a Foundation at Liverpool International College last year and has progressed to the University of Liverpool:

"Vlogging is a pretty great way to improve a student’s English. When you're a vlogger, it involves quite a lot of speaking and your viewers come from many different places, so you may have no choice but to speak English. For viewers to understand what you are taking about, you will find yourself constantly trying to learn more and more English, so that you can properly interact with your audience."

Shravan from Mauritius

Shravan completed his Foundation at Glasgow International College and now studies at the University of Glasgow:

"The Kaplan Student Ambassador programme has really given me a chance to improve my English skills. When vlogging, most of the videos are focussed on what I do as a student in Glasgow, and it has helped me learn how to formulate my ideas clearly and deliver them in an efficient and simple way."
