19 Sep 2019 - Ama Adusei

Studying abroad might seem scary at first — leaving behind your friends and family can be tough. That's why it's so important to make new friends when you arrive at your study destination. With great friends around you, your study abroad experience can be one of the best times in your life! Here's our advice on how to make friends when you move abroad.

Connect online

Connect online

One of the best things about social media is that you can connect with people with the click of a button. Before your course starts, follow all the social media platforms of your new university or college. It will allow you to keep up to date with upcoming events and it's a great chance to start messaging your new classmates.

In addition, a vast majority of universities now have private Facebook groups dedicated to new starters.

Make an effort

Make an effort
Be open to trying new things when you move abroad, whether that means learning a new language, taking part in a new activity, talking to someone you wouldn't usually talk to, or travelling around the city. If you have a positive attitude to new things, you'll be surprised by all the new experiences that may come your way. So, be open-minded, but always remember to stay true to yourself!

Volunteer

Many universities now offer volunteering opportunities. Not only is this the perfect way to meet new people, it's a great way to give back to your new community, build your skills and gain valuable experience. And, if that's not enough, remember it will look good on your CV!

Join a student society

Joining a club or society allows you to meet like-minded people you may not have crossed paths with otherwise. It's a great chance to take up a new hobby (or continue with one you love!), learn new skills, have fun and meet people.

Live in student accommodation

Living in student accommodation means you'll be surrounded by people around your age who are in the same position as you. You may not share the same interests as your flatmates, but they'll be the perfect group of people to go to Welcome Week with. And you never know, you may build strong, lasting friendships with them.

Enjoy yourself!

Finally, remember to enjoy yourself! Everyone will be in the same position as you, and will want to make friends too!
