Bournemouth University (BU) is well known for its strength in technology and the arts; it should therefore come as no surprise that BU graduates are once again contending for Oscars glory.
The upcoming Oscars feature a range of impressive films and cinematic accomplishments, but BU has every reason to be particularly proud. The University has at least 30 graduates involved in nominated films; an impressive feat.
Unsurprisingly given BU’s excellence in animation and technology, these are largely in the category of ‘best visual effects’.
In fact, BU alumni have worked on 4 out of the 5 films nominated in the category – Deepwater Horizon, Doctor Strange, The Jungle Book and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The other film in the category is Kubo and the Two Strings.
Groundbreaking and cutting-edge special effects were used in many of the films nominated. This includes using CGI to transform actor Guy Henry into the late Pete Cushing (aka the evil Grand Moff Tarkin) in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
BU is a great university for students interested in Computer Animation
BU graduates worked on projects that were successful at last year's Oscars as well. Sofronis Efstathiou, BU’s principal lecturer in the field of Computer Animation, said:
“Each year we wait expectantly as the shortlist is announced, and this year, carrying on the success, we are really pleased to see a number of films nominated that have been directly worked on by our graduates – we are so proud of their achievements.”
Here at Kaplan, we're also proud of BU's great record at the Oscars - and other high profile film awards - and we wish this year's Oscars hopefuls the best of luck!
Thankfully, they've been well prepared for success. Bournemouth University’s excellence in Film, Computer Animation and similar areas has helped its graduates go on to work for many prestigious film and visual effects companies. It's a fantastic choice for students who want a head start in the film and special effects industry.
